Join ZOUZ incense founder Mike Paré for a virtual, two hour sensory introduction to the ancient art of Incense making and natural incense materials. Learn the basics of making your own natural incense. Workshop will introduce a Japanese-style of incense making using traditional materials. The course draws from the history of incense and students will be introduced to a variety of aromatic herbs, spices, tree resins and powders. Participants will leave the class with their own incense to burn and share.

The workshop consists of 3 parts:
Part 1: Incense Burning
Participants will learn historical and cultural aspects of incense. They will get acquainted with incense materials by burning them with a charcoal and censer. Creative and interactive exercises will involve incense burning and smelling ingredients, while learning the philosophy and techniques around formulating an incense blend.
Part 2: Formulation
Participants will will learn to formulate, assemble, and mix their blends. You will be sent a kit of incense materials including resins, herbs, woods, charcoal, ash and a concrete hand cast incense burner.
Part 3: Hand Rolling Incense
Participants form their blend into a burnable form by hand rolling cones or joss sticks. Drying and storage of incense will be discussed.
All materials for experimenting and making 40-60 incense pieces are included in the cost of the class.
Make it with a friend- There is enough materials in the kit to make 3 different batches of incense. Share a fun afternoon exploring natural aromatics!
Materials in the workshop kit: Censer, Bamboo Charcoal, White Ash, Tongs and Pipette. Also over a dozen different aromatic woods, resins and herbs, instruction booklet and more.
